Practicing generosity and extending love and kindness to all sentient beings has enhanced my happiness and hopefully has had a positive effect on the recipients of these gestures. After reading this book, I am truly living a life with greater equanimity.
This book was a comforting guide to what can be a life of mindful awareness. The author uses a loving, gentle, but thorough voice full of resolve from decades of practice to detail all the ups and downs and challenges of life, even his own life, as well as the rewards that await us if we choose to both turn inward for wisdom and outward
This book was a comforting guide to what can be a life of mindful awareness. The author uses a loving, gentle, but thorough voice full of resolve from decades of practice to detail all the ups and downs and challenges of life, even his own life, as well as the rewards that await us if we choose to both turn inward for wisdom and outward with loving kindness. I have read and will reread it, I'm sure. It's like hearing a dharma talk in each chapter. I also liked all the suggested mindfulness exercises.

It is an excellent choice for students who are new to mindfulness meditation or those who have been practicing for a while. The book explores in simple language the challenges one can face while meditating and the natural factors and teachers that are inherent in our practice that can guide us along the way. Mark refers to these as the “Guardians of the Heart” and the “Teachers of Transformation” that you will encounter the longer you practice. Guardians of the Heart include wisdom, compassion, patience, lovingkindness, and equanimity. The Teachers of Transformation can include our relationships, difficult people, and our challenges in daily life at work and the world.
Mark shares his personal experiences to show how mindfulness practice naturally develops the Guardians of the Heart which can aid you in navigating the challenges of being human by changing your reactions to these events where it seems we have little control and cause us so much anxiety and fear.
The book is full of insights regarding the practice of mindfulness and includes a very skillful technique for managing life's ups and downs. It is found in the acronym, SMILE. When something happens that triggers a little upset (it is good to start small), follow the steps in this acronym to gently move through the upset without becoming a bull in a teashop.
